African Union to Host Inaugural African Energy Efficiency Conference in Ethiopia

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) of the African Union, in collaboration with regional centers for renewable energy and energy efficiency and other partners, will host the inaugural African Energy Efficiency Conference (AEEC) on December 10-11, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference will be held at African Union Commission Headquarters.
The AEEC will convene ministers responsible for energy from African Union member states, high-level representatives from development partners, businesses, NGOs, research institutions, and other key stakeholders. Pre-conference events, including partner meetings and expert training in various thematic areas, will precede the conference.
The AEEC is organized under the African Energy Efficiency Alliance (AEEA), a collaborative platform adopted by African Heads of State and Government. The AEEA brings together global stakeholders working on energy efficiency in Africa to promote knowledge sharing, strengthen advocacy and awareness, support research and development, facilitate technology transfer, and mobilize financing and investments for energy efficiency programs.
The AEEA was launched at COP29 by the African Energy Commission (AFREC), serving as the regional platform to advance energy efficiency programs in Africa. The inaugural conference provides a crucial opportunity to assess the progress of African Member States toward the continental objective of enhancing energy productivity by 50% by 2050 and 70% by 2063.
These targets align with the global goal of doubling energy efficiency by 2030. It aims to mobilize technical and financial support, strengthen partnerships for implementing energy efficiency programs, and facilitate the exchange of experiences and outcomes from ongoing initiatives across Africa. This initiative is part of Africa’s commitment made at COP28 to double energy efficiency improvements and triple renewables by 2030.
